This week, our man crush is a talented fashion designer with international recognition, Duro Olowu. Born to his Nigerian father and Jamaican mother in the city of Lagos, Duro’s childhood was spent between Nigeria and Europe. Following his father’s footsteps, Duro got his law degree and practiced for a few years before returning to an old passion of his –fashion.
In 2004, he started his eponymous fashion label with his first collection booming in the international fashion scene. This collection featured the iconic ‘Duro’ dress which received accolades as the dress of the year from both British and American Vogue in 2005. Later that same year, he won the ‘New Designer of the Year Award’ at the British Fashion Awards, becoming the first designer to win this award without a runway show.
His list of awards grew alongside his international fame as he became notable for his artsy style in dressing women around the world. His mixed-media style of fashion design also set the pace for his cultural infusion into modern style.
